2027, Tanzania | Elewana to open Ngorongoro Explorer Lodge, 84 rooms on the crater rim

In June 2027, Elewana will open Ngorongoro Explorer Lodge, an 84-room property built on the highest point of the eastern rim of Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater. Following Serengeti Explorer, this second address under the Explorer brand replaces an existing lodge. It targets an upscale positioning broadened to families, wellness and gastronomy.

A prime position on the eastern rim

Elewana has announced the opening, in June 2027, of Ngorongoro Explorer Lodge. The property occupies the highest point on the eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the finest vantage points over the caldera. The site notably offers sunrises facing directly onto the crater.

The lodge is located 15 minutes from the crater gate. The caldera floor is home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, with around 25,000 large mammals, including the Big Five. The property also provides access to Olduvai Gorge, known as the “Cradle of Humankind”, which, like the crater, lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The project comes amid a period of sustained activity in Tanzania’s high-end safari segment. In May 2026, Auberge Collection made its debut on the continent with Auberge Safari, a portfolio of nine lodges and camps in Tanzania.

Architecture designed to defer to the crater

The lodge has been designed by 2802 Architects, the practice already behind Serengeti Explorer. The buildings rely on a palette of neutral and dark tones, framed by dense vegetation, so that the crater remains the star of the show.

The lodge features lounges with fireplaces and terraces set along the rim. Interior design has been entrusted to Jallan Sahba, who drew inspiration from the topography and character of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Activities beyond the game drive

In line with the Explorer brand concept, Ngorongoro Explorer combines upscale accommodation with highly attentive service and an activity programme that goes beyond motorised game drives. Guests will be able to attend cultural talks, go stargazing, use a photography studio, practise yoga and meditation or visit a cinema room, in addition to game drives on the crater floor.

The lodge also caters to growing demand from families and multigenerational travellers. A programme for children of all ages will offer introductory activities on wildlife and local cultures, as well as game drives tailored to each age group.

Five dining outlets and a wine cellar

The lodge will offer several dining venues: a main restaurant, an open-air boma-style dining area, a pool bar, a terrace bar and a café. The menu will showcase local produce and cooking techniques, with an international touch.

A wine cellar equipped with state-of-the-art preservation systems will allow fine wines to be served by the glass. This offering already exists at Serengeti Explorer, where it has been very well received by guests.

A wellness hub facing the caldera

The spa will feature four treatment rooms, including a double suite, as well as a sauna, a rasul hammam, a cold plunge pool, a vitality pool and a gym. An infinity pool will look directly out over the crater.

84 rooms, including six family rooms

The 84 rooms comprise 45 double rooms, 29 twin rooms, six family rooms and four accessible rooms for guests with reduced mobility, compliant with the US ADA standard. All feature floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the crater. Interiors combine rich fabrics and handcrafted objects that evoke the surrounding environment and local culture.

Each room is equipped with a minibar, a telephone, a kettle with a tea and coffee station, and universal charging sockets. A multimedia room will be able to host conferences and events for up to 40 people.

Rates start at around €365 per person on a full-board basis and around €620 per person on a game package.

A rebuild with no additional beds

The lodge is being built on the site of an existing property. It will therefore add no bed nights to the area’s accommodation capacity. Materials from the former lodge are being reused to limit the impact on the local ecosystem.

Construction draws on sustainable building techniques. Elewana is targeting EDGE certification, which it hopes to obtain before opening. A share of room-night revenue will be donated to the Land & Life Foundation, the group’s charitable arm dedicated to community development and wildlife conservation.

Our analysis – For investors, building on an already permitted site rather than on greenfield land is a significant choice. In a heavily regulated UNESCO-listed area, this approach keeps accommodation capacity unchanged while moving markedly upmarket. It strengthens the offer in one of Tanzania’s most visited destinations without increasing pressure on the site.

A collection of 17 lodges and camps in East Africa

Elewana Collection brings together 17 small safari lodges and camps in iconic locations across Kenya and Tanzania. “Elewana” means “harmony” in Swahili. The brand is part of the Minor Hotels portfolio, alongside Anantara, Avani and Oaks, as LTH noted on the occasion of Craig Wood’s appointment as head of Minor Vacations.

The rise of Explorer reflects a broader trend in luxury safari across southern and eastern Africa, as also illustrated by the Vestige Xaudum project, due to open in Namibia in March 2027.
