A first in Greece for Fairmont

The Fairmont Chania Resort marks the first foothold in the Greek market for Accor’s luxury brand. The project is being led by Hersonissos Group Hotels, the owner partner in the deal, and forms part of Fairmont’s global growth strategy.

Omer Acar, CEO of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, described the signing as a landmark moment marking Fairmont’s inaugural entry into Greece. He sees the country as a strategic and exciting addition to the brand’s global portfolio, one that reflects the group’s commitment to thoughtful, responsible development in destinations that share its long-term vision of exceptional, high-quality tourism.

The resort will be located in Chania, a coastal city whose old town retains a strong Venetian heritage. The property will enjoy a beachfront setting, with direct access to a wide sandy beach and a dedicated beach club.

A Cretan partner at the helm

Hersonissos Group Hotels presents the project as one with a strong architectural and local dimension. Its CEO, Georgios Kaloutsakis, said he was immensely proud that the group is bringing Fairmont to Greece, adding that Chania and Crete hold a very special place for the company.

His ambition extends beyond the asset itself: to create a resort defined by a deeply artistic architectural vision and a genuine dialogue with the island’s heritage and landscapes, which he believes could help set a new design benchmark for future developments in the region. He also presents the Fairmont Chania Resort as a catalyst for sustainability within the local tourism ecosystem.

Architecture inspired by Venetian heritage

The architectural design is by Luciano Mazza. The concept reinterprets Chania’s Venetian heritage, from its maritime past to its trading links with the Most Serene Republic, through a contemporary Mediterranean lens. The architect Carlo Scarpa is among the project’s principal references.

The built volumes evoke historic naval architecture, while recurring details give structure to the façades. Interior design for the private and public spaces has been entrusted to Inge Moore, and landscape design to Phil Jaffa, who is tasked with integrating the gardens and outdoor spaces into the whole.

A programme designed for leisure, families and events

The resort will have 104 rooms, including 40 suites. The food and beverage offer will centre on five concepts, complemented by a speciality restaurant. A 900 sq m wellness centre with six treatment rooms is also planned.

The programme targets several guest segments. A private on-site chapel will host destination weddings, while groups and events will have their own swimming pool. Families will benefit from separate kids’ and teens’ clubs.

Accor consolidates its position in the Mediterranean

For Xavier Grange, Global Chief Development Officer, Accor Luxury Brands Europe-North Africa, Greece remains a market in which Accor continues to grow with conviction. He believes the deal consolidates the group’s position as a leading operator in the Mediterranean and reflects its ambition to keep raising the standard of its luxury portfolio in the region.

Fairmont currently has seventeen properties in Europe and North Africa, with five further hotels and resorts planned across the region, whose operations are overseen by Christian Poda, recently appointed Vice President of Operations Europe and North Africa. The regional portfolio includes the 596-key Fairmont Monte-Carlo, the Fairmont Taghazout in Morocco and the recently opened Fairmont La Hacienda, Costa del Sol, in Spain.

In Portugal, the Victoria Golf Resort & Spa, already managed by Accor, is set to take on the Fairmont flag once works are complete. The Cretan signing extends a sustained run of development for the brand, which recently announced the Fairmont Rishikesh Himalayas in India and launched one of the largest renovation campaigns in its history.

Analysis – With this project, Fairmont fills a notable gap in one of the most fiercely contested coastal markets in Mediterranean luxury. The choice of a local partner and a multi-segment programme combining leisure, families, weddings and groups points to a destination-resort strategy rather than simply a beachfront address.
