An appointment marking a new chapter for Planters Inn

Planters Inn, a historic property in Charleston’s Historic District, has appointed Giorgio Di Pietro as General Manager. He brings more than two decades of international hospitality experience across Europe, the United States and the Middle East.

Although his appointment was the subject of a further announcement on 15 October 2026, it had already been made public during the summer. On 28 August, the hotelier shared news of his appointment on LinkedIn, expressing his intention to preserve the property’s heritage while supporting its move upmarket.

This chronology is significant: Giorgio Di Pietro was already identified as General Manager when the refurbishment programme was announced in July 2026. His appointment should therefore not be interpreted as having taken effect only in October.

A hotel dating back to 1844 undergoing its first comprehensive refurbishment in decades

Located in Charleston’s Historic District, Planters Inn occupies a building whose history dates back to 1844. The property comprises 64 rooms and suites and is home to the fine-dining restaurant Peninsula Grill.

The refurbishment programme, announced in July 2026, encompasses all guest accommodation, public spaces and the restaurant. The project is being led by Dallas-based Studio 11 Design, with completion scheduled for January 2027.

The design approach aims to preserve the building’s residential character and historic identity while modernising the guest experience. The guestrooms will draw inspiration from Charleston’s traditional homes. The lobby, lounges and landscaped courtyard designed by Sheila Wertimer are also included in the scope of works.

The refurbishment is being undertaken in phases to balance the property’s transformation with the continuity of hotel operations.

Peninsula Grill: a strategic component of the repositioning

The transformation extends beyond the guestrooms. It also includes Peninsula Grill, Charleston’s established fine-dining restaurant, whose culinary identity contributes to Planters Inn’s reputation.

The property has notably announced the return of Executive Chef John Ondo, who will refresh the restaurant’s culinary offering with an emphasis on the produce and traditions of the Lowcountry, South Carolina’s coastal region.

The restaurant’s refurbishment therefore combines redesigned interiors with renewed culinary direction. Peninsula Grill’s official website states that the restaurant is temporarily closed for renovations and announces a reopening in autumn 2026, without specifying a confirmed date.

For Giorgio Di Pietro, the challenge is to coordinate two complementary priorities: modernising the hotel product and revitalising the food and beverage offering, which serves a clientele extending beyond the hotel’s resident guests.

From Miami Beach to Charleston: a career shaped by hotel repositioning

Before joining Planters Inn, Giorgio Di Pietro was General Manager of Esmé Hotel Miami Beach, located on Española Way, one of Miami Beach’s historic streets.

The hotel is distinguished by its Mediterranean-inspired architecture and its configuration across several buildings, offering accommodation, restaurants, bars and social spaces.

According to information released in connection with his appointment, Giorgio Di Pietro oversaw year-on-year growth in the hotel’s net operating income (NOI) and a reduction in employee turnover. However, the corresponding financial figures and percentages have not been disclosed.

Esmé also received One Michelin Key for two consecutive years, a distinction reflecting its positioning within the distinctive boutique hotel segment.

His career also includes positions with PUBLIC Hotel New York, Nautilus by Arlo, Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club and Starwood Hotels & Resorts. He has additionally worked in hospitality and cruise operations with Celebrity Cruises, Taj Hotels Resorts & Palaces in London, Group King Kamehameha in Mallorca and a royal family in the Middle East.

These experiences reflect a professional background combining hotel operations, team leadership, commercial development and the management of property transformations.

Born in Naples, Giorgio Di Pietro holds a degree from the University of Naples Federico II, an Executive MBA from ADM International Business School in Madrid and a Hospitality & Tourism Management Certificate from Florida Atlantic University. He speaks English, Italian and Spanish.

Crystal Creek Capital: a hotel investment initiated in 2025

The refurbishment of Planters Inn follows its acquisition in March 2025 by Crystal Creek Capital, a US real estate investment firm based in Wyoming.

This ownership dimension provides additional context for Giorgio Di Pietro’s appointment.

The property benefits from a central location in an established tourism destination, a strong historic identity and a recognised restaurant. The refurbishment aims to reinforce these advantages while adapting the hotel product to the contemporary expectations of upscale guests.

The acquisition price, total refurbishment budget and financial targets associated with the repositioning are not specified in the sources consulted. It is therefore not currently possible to assess the capital invested or the returns anticipated.

The new General Manager’s responsibilities nevertheless come at a sensitive operational stage: overseeing the works, maintaining service standards, preparing the renovated spaces for their return to market and ensuring consistency between Planters Inn’s historic identity and its future positioning.

LTH Analysis | General management as a driver of hotel asset value

Giorgio Di Pietro’s appointment illustrates the importance of operational leadership in hotel repositioning strategies. For a real estate investor, refurbishment is a lever for value creation, but translating that investment into improved performance also depends on commercial strategy, cost control and the quality of the guest experience. At Planters Inn, the challenge is particularly significant because the property must modernise its offering without diluting its heritage identity. Giorgio Di Pietro’s background, particularly in Miami Beach, appears well suited to these requirements. The ultimate measure of success will be Planters Inn’s ability to convert its refurbishment investment into sustainable improvements in revenue, operating profitability and competitive positioning after January 2027.
