A return to Ritz-Carlton after Mexico’s Pacific coast

Hugo Lecanda has been appointed General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Turks & Caicos, in Providenciales. He knows Marriott International’s luxury brand well, having already led three of its properties across two continents.

Before arriving in the archipelago, he had served since August 2024 as multi-property General Manager of Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa and The Westin Resort & Spa, Puerto Vallarta. The latter has since been repositioned in the all-inclusive segment, as LTH reported in May on the opening of The Westin Playa Vallarta, Westin’s first all-inclusive resort in Mexico, of which he was then General Manager.

Alongside this, he served as area general manager for other properties in Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita. The remit covered operational coordination and guest-experience work across the area.

Three Ritz-Carlton hotels across Mexico, Spain and Hungary

Hugo Lecanda‘s career with the brand spans more than seven years. He first led The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun, from 2013 to 2015, followed by The Ritz-Carlton, Abama, in Tenerife, from 2015 to 2019. He then took the helm of The Ritz-Carlton, Budapest, until August 2020.

During this period, he was named the Ritz-Carlton brand’s Global General Manager of the Year in 2015, and European General Manager of the Year in 2017. He also received further professional accolades during his years leading properties in the Caribbean and Latin America region.

Earlier in his career, he led the JW Marriott in Quito, Ecuador, from 2011 to 2013. Before that, he spent almost seven years as hotel manager of the JW Marriott and CM Marriott in Cancún.

An all-inclusive luxury interlude with Palladium

Between 2020 and 2024, Hugo Lecanda worked for Palladium Hotel Group, between Ibiza and Madrid. There he served as Global Director of Operations for BLESS Collection Hotels, a member collection of The Leading Hotels of the World. BLESS Hotel Ibiza holds five Forbes stars, a Michelin Key and a Michelin-starred restaurant.

He concurrently held the role of Senior Director of Operations for TRS Europe, in the luxury all-inclusive segment. Among other projects, he oversaw the conversion and opening of the 370-room TRS Ibiza following a major renovation.

His career began in the early 1990s at Starwood Hotels & Resorts, as director of group sales. He then moved to Cancún, where he held the posts of director of groups, director of food and beverage and then rooms director at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach.

A grounding in finance

Hugo Lecanda holds an MBA in administration and management from the University of Liverpool. He is also a Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) and holds the Leading with Finance certificate from Harvard Business School. In addition, he has completed a customer-centricity programme at IE Business School.

Our Analysis – This appointment comes in an archipelago where the luxury offering continues to grow. It places the property in the hands of a leader who combines Ritz-Carlton brand culture with recent experience of the all-inclusive model, in a market where investment in resort and branded-residence projects is multiplying in Grace Bay.
