An address at the heart of Hokkaido’s capital

Hyatt Centric Sapporo occupies the upper floors of a mixed-use tower in the centre of Sapporo. The hotel stands next to Akarenga-chosha, the former Hokkaido Government Office known as the Red Brick Building. It is also close to Odori Park, which hosts the Sapporo Snow Festival, the YOSAKOI Soran Festival and the Sapporo Autumn Fest every year.

An underground passage links the hotel to Odori metro station in a matter of minutes, while JR Sapporo Station is around ten minutes’ walk away. This accessibility is a central selling point for a brand that positions itself as a launchpad for exploring the city and the rest of the island.

The project was formalised in 2022 through a management agreement with NTT Urban Development Corporation, with an opening then scheduled for 2024. It adds to a local presence that Hyatt continues to strengthen, with the future Park Hyatt Sapporo, expected in 2029.

Sapporo, gateway to a major tourism market

As the capital of Hokkaido, Sapporo provides access to the island’s ski resorts, hot springs, national parks and mountain landscapes. The city attracts both domestic and international visitors. Each winter, the Sapporo Snow Festival transforms it with snow sculptures, ice installations and skating rinks.

Hokkaido is also renowned for the quality of its seafood and its dining scene. The group is already active there in the high-end residential segment, with ONE HANAZONO VILLAS, the first Park Hyatt residences in Niseko.

Yuki Takimura, General Manager of Hyatt Centric Sapporo, said the team was delighted to introduce the Hyatt Centric brand to Sapporo, a vibrant destination where every season reveals a new side of Hokkaido. Located at the heart of the action, the hotel has been designed as an ideal starting point for exploration, Takimura added, and the team looks forward to helping World of Hyatt members and guests discover, through an insider’s lens, the local flavours, cultural traditions and seasonal experiences that make each stay unique.

A design inspired by explorer Takeshiro Matsuura

The hotel’s design draws on Takeshiro Matsuura, the explorer and cartographer credited with naming Hokkaido. The property is conceived as a contemporary “residence of the northern explorer”. It reflects the island’s heritage, landscapes and traditions through its architecture, art, materials, culinary offer and guest experiences.

All 216 rooms and suites measure 36 sq m or more. Large picture windows bring in natural light and open onto views of the city. The interiors combine a wooden reception counter crafted by a local artisan, straw artworks, reclaimed wood and motifs drawn from everyday regional life. A lounge with a fireplace completes the scheme.

Two dining concepts rooted in local produce

Located on the 17th floor, Matsu Grill & Bar showcases Hokkaido’s produce from land and sea. Wood-fired cooking is given a Mediterranean twist, with the open kitchen at the centre of a restaurant offering panoramic views over the city.

On the ground floor, a few steps from the Red Brick Building, Mr. Fish by Hyatt Centric Sapporo serves fish and chips made with seasonal white fish caught in the waters around Hokkaido, accompanied by local potatoes and craft beers. This casual café also offers takeaway options, including fish burgers and churros, and is intended as a point of connection with the local community.

The Hyatt Centric model, built on local expertise

The hotel’s Local Insiders advise guests beyond the standard guidebooks. Their recommendations take into account the season, neighbourhood life and each guest’s interests. A seasonal map and daily picks guide travellers, from the cherry blossoms of spring to winter experiences.

The Hyatt Centric brand comprises modern, full-service boutique hotels in vibrant cities and leisure destinations. It focuses on social spaces, from the lobby to the bar and restaurant, on streamlined rooms, and on a team tasked with sharing its knowledge of the neighbourhood.

To mark the opening, Hyatt is offering a launch package on direct bookings made before 31 October 2026, for stays until 31 December 2026. It includes a 15% discount, rising to 17% for World of Hyatt members, along with breakfast and a hotel credit. Programme members also earn double points on eligible spend.

A group of more than 1,500 properties

As of 30 June 2026, the Hyatt Hotels Corporation portfolio included more than 1,500 hotels and all-inclusive properties in 83 countries across six continents. Hyatt Centric is part of the Classics Portfolio, alongside Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency and Destination by Hyatt.

Analysis – The Sapporo opening confirms Japan’s place in Hyatt’s Asia-Pacific development. The group is rolling out several brands there, from lifestyle to luxury, at a time when it is relying on financing, leaner prototypes and conversions to accelerate its growth.
