An executive already closely involved with Torel Boutiques

The appointment of Ingrid Koeck as Chief Executive Officer of Torel Boutiques follows a decade of involvement in the Portuguese group’s development.

A partner since March 2016, she has overseen communications, marketing, strategic positioning and external representation of the brand. She has contributed to shaping Torel Boutiques’ identity, built around distinctive hospitality, design and the celebration of each property’s individual history.

Her appointment, effective from October 2026 according to her professional profile, coincides with the establishment of a new Executive Committee.

The group, which owns nine properties in Portugal, now intends to prioritise operational consolidation and a selective development strategy.

From the United Nations to distinctive boutique hospitality

Ingrid Koeck’s career is distinguished by extensive international experience acquired well before her involvement in Portuguese hospitality.

A graduate of the University of Vienna in Communications and Political Science, she began her career in advertising, public relations and journalism, notably working with the Austrian publications Reise aktuell and Die Presse.

She subsequently joined several United Nations missions, holding positions in political affairs:

  • In Burundi, with ONUB, between 2004 and 2006.
  • In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with MONUC, between 2006 and 2008.
  • In Somalia, with UNPOS, between 2008 and 2011.
  • In Lebanon, with UNIFIL, between 2013 and 2015.
  • She also participated in European Union election observation missions in Senegal and Jordan.

This experience enabled her to develop expertise in diplomatic coordination, political analysis, negotiation and the management of complex environments.

A career transition supported by a family background in hospitality

Her move into the hotel industry did not, however, represent a complete departure from her personal background.

Ingrid Koeck has more than fifteen years of experience in her family’s bed-and-breakfast and restaurant businesses.

Having settled in Portugal in 2015, she joined Torel Boutiques the following year, bringing expertise in communications, public relations and brand strategy.

Her approach places particular emphasis on storytelling, personalised guest experiences and the importance of human relationships.

LTH Analysis | Can diplomacy provide a foundation for hotel leadership?

Ingrid Koeck’s appointment adds to the debate surrounding the increasing diversity of professional backgrounds among hotel chief executives.

Following the institutional, financial and legal career paths recently highlighted at Pestana, Torel Boutiques illustrates another transition: from international diplomacy to corporate management.

Experience within the United Nations can provide transferable skills in negotiation, crisis management, intercultural communication and understanding complex power dynamics.

It may also bring an extensive international professional network. However, what makes this appointment particularly distinctive is the combination of Koeck’s diplomatic background with ten years of operational and strategic involvement at Torel Boutiques.

Does access to senior hotel leadership still depend primarily on traditional operational career paths, or is the industry becoming increasingly receptive to expertise developed in other professional environments?
