American expedition travel group Lindblad Expeditions Holdings took a major step in reshaping its brand portfolio on 15 September 2026. The Nasdaq-listed company (LIND) acquired a 60% stake in White Desert, the pioneering Antarctic luxury tourism operator, and in Echo Charlie, a new adventure aviation brand created alongside the deal.

An unprecedented deal for the group

Lindblad Expeditions paid approximately $61 million (around €53 million) for the majority stake, plus a further roughly $6 million (around €5 million) in respect of cash held on the two companies’ balance sheets, subject to customary adjustments for working capital, cash and debt.

Investment bank Baird acted as exclusive financial adviser to White Desert and Echo Charlie on the transaction. Natalya Leahy, CEO of Lindblad Expeditions, said the deal went beyond financial terms, describing it as a powerful partnership between two companies that have each spent decades pushing the boundaries of experiential travel, even as it stands as the largest transaction in the group’s history. White Desert: two decades as an Antarctic pioneer

Founded in 2005 by polar explorer Patrick Woodhead, White Desert flies clients into the remote interior of Antarctica, combining rigorous logistics with a level of comfort previously unseen on the ice. Its itineraries include a stop at the geographic South Pole and visits to an emperor penguin colony of more than 20,000 birds.

The company now employs more than 150 staff representing 18 nationalities and positions itself as a reference point on aviation, safety and sustainable luxury tourism. Patrick Woodhead, founder and Chairman of White Desert, said that after twenty years spent opening up tourism in Antarctica’s interior, the company was proud to partner with an operator that had achieved the same on the continent’s coasts forty years earlier, adding that a shared vision of responsible, human-scale travel made the team excited for what comes next. Echo Charlie: a new adventure aviation brand

Inspired by the golden age of aviation, Echo Charlie runs its itineraries aboard a fully restored DC-3, capable of landing on remote airstrips without relying on commercial airport infrastructure. The brand carries up to 12 travellers per flight and offers routes linking destinations as varied as Colombia, Patagonia, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

Patrick Woodhead said that by extending the company’s aviation expertise beyond Antarctica, Echo Charlie’s itineraries explore the far reaches of the globe, from Colombia to Patagonia and the Faroe Islands to Greenland, offering authentic adventure made safe and accessible — with the only remaining question being where to go next. Natalya Leahy added that Echo Charlie brings to life what many people have only ever known through childhood stories: reaching hidden places, uncovering the secrets of ancient cultures and discovering landscapes of extraordinary diversity. Governance: Patrick Woodhead stays at the helm

Patrick Woodhead will serve as Chairman of White Desert and CEO of Echo Charlie, while also joining Lindblad Expeditions as Strategic Innovation Advisor. His aviation and exploration expertise is expected to inform innovation, responsible growth and future guest experiences across the group’s wider portfolio.

As with other brands that have joined Lindblad Expeditions in recent years, White Desert and Echo Charlie will continue to operate independently, preserving their founding vision and culture while benefiting from the group’s reach, capabilities and resources. Mark Ein, Co-Chairman of the Board, placed the deal within a longer-term strategy, saying that for the past decade the group’s ambition has been to build a global platform of exceptional experiential travel brands driven by expertise, passion and innovation, and led by iconic founders — with the addition of White Desert and Echo Charlie now bringing an exceptional new set of journeys to that offering. FY2026 guidance raised

Lindblad Expeditions used the announcement to raise its financial guidance for fiscal year 2026, reflecting the contribution of White Desert and Echo Charlie alongside sustained performance across its existing operations. The group now expects Tour revenue of between $850 million and $880 million (around €736 to €762 million), net yield per available guest night of 5.5% to 6.5%, and Adjusted EBITDA of between $140 million and $148 million (around €121 to €128 million). Natalya Leahy said the updated guidance reflected both an exciting new chapter for the group, with White Desert and Echo Charlie joining its global platform of experiential travel brands, and the continued momentum of its underlying business and the strength of its economic model. Consolidation continues in experiential travel

The deal reflects the wider consolidation under way in the adventure and expedition travel segment, driven by sustained demand for immersive, differentiated experiences. The expedition cruise market is seeing similarly strong momentum, exemplified by Swan Hellenic, which recently restructured its commercial teams following 347% growth in a year. The rise of these operators is also fuelling growing movement of talent between adventure operators and hospitality groups, as seen in the appointment at Under Canvas of Noah Brodsky, former Chief Commercial Officer of Lindblad Expeditions, who has been named CEO of the American luxury camping brand.
