A first foothold in the Greek capital

Based in Cyprus, MHV Mediterranean Hospitality Venture, a group active in hospitality and real estate, is taking control of one of the most centrally located hotels in Athens. Moxy Athens City stands a short walk from Omonia Square, in the heart of the Greek capital.

Until now, the group owned two properties in Greece, one in Porto Heli and the other in Paros. Athens therefore becomes its third address in the country and its first in the capital.

According to the group, the acquisition forms part of its strategic plan to strengthen and expand its presence in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean, driven by hotel and real estate projects positioned in lifestyle-inspired luxury.

A lifestyle asset opened in 2022

Operated under Marriott International’s Moxy brand, the hotel opened in 2022. Its concept is built around a relaxed atmosphere, playful interior design and a regular programme of events centred on art, fashion and music.

The traditional reception desk is replaced by a signature bar where guests are welcomed with a complimentary cocktail. The latest technology, bright colours, a pop aesthetic and a musical atmosphere round out an offer that has enabled the hotel to establish itself with guests looking to discover Athens from a highly central address.

The hotel has 200 rooms and a Penthouse Suite, all in line with Moxy brand standards.

A penthouse designed as an event space

Located on the ninth floor, the Penthouse Suite is presented by the group as the Moxy brand’s first rooftop event space worldwide to serve as both accommodation and a venue. It hosts private and personal events.

The suite combines 79 sq m of indoor space with a 158 sq m outdoor urban garden patio, offering views of the Acropolis and Mount Lycabettus.

An integrated model, from ownership to operation

MHV is not limiting itself to owning the asset. The group is also taking over management of the hotel, as it does across all its properties in Limassol, Nicosia, Porto Heli, Paros and now Athens.

Moxy Athens City thus joins a portfolio of hotels, resorts and real estate projects spread across Cyprus and Greece. The group claims expertise in luxury hospitality and high-end real estate, with the ambition of offering its local and international clientele carefully curated lifestyle experiences.

The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

MHV’s arrival comes as the Greek capital is attracting the attention of numerous international groups. Accor, notably, has signed a third MGallery within the VORIA project, while Ruby Hotels is preparing its entry into Athens and Hilton has announced three lifestyle hotels there.

Against this backdrop, MHV has opted for an asset that has been operating since 2022, backed by an international brand and located in the city centre, rather than a development project. It is a way of entering the Athens market through a hotel already established in the city’s hospitality landscape.
