The Four Seasons Resort Langkawi has announced the promotion of Tobias Emmer to the position of General Manager. Having joined the property in 2024 as Resort Manager — an appointment previously covered by La Tribune de l’Hôtellerie — the executive now takes charge of the resort’s entire operations, on the island of Langkawi, a UNESCO Global Geopark.

A promotion that extends a journey begun in 2024

This move from Resort Manager to General Manager reflects the Canadian group’s policy of internal promotion, regularly entrusting leadership of its most strategic properties to executives trained within the company. “Langkawi is one of the most extraordinary settings in the region, and our role is to help our guests fully experience it, through the rainforest, the coastline, the geology and the culture that surround us,” says Tobias Emmer.

From Munich to Shanghai, a career forged in Europe

The new General Manager grew up in Germany, where he developed an early passion for hospitality inherited from an uncle who spent his entire career in the industry. As a teenager, he trained at a well-known hotel in Munich, before going on to earn a degree in tourism.

Several years spent in London with the same hotel group rounded out this initial training. In 2012, a pre-opening assignment took him to Shanghai, where he joined the launch team of a five-star hotel.

A career built within Four Seasons

Tobias Emmer joined Four Seasons in 2015, at the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa, where he rose quickly through the ranks to become Director of Rooms. Three years later, he took on his first Resort Manager role at the Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle, in the remote Chiang Rai region of Thailand.

He then joined the Four Seasons Hotel Singapore as Director of Rooms, a role he held for two and a half years before relocating to Langkawi in 2024. “My journey with Four Seasons has taught me that excellence goes beyond service. It is about crafting moments of discovery, connection and presence that allow our guests to experience a destination more fully. How do you preserve the authentic spirit of a place while elevating comfort, luxury and accessibility? That is precisely where the magic lies,” he says.

Renovations and a festive season among the new General Manager’s first priorities

Among the priorities announced are the launch of five renovated beach villas and an end-of-year programme inspired by Malaysian craftsmanship, flavours and traditions. The resort, on the shores of the Andaman Sea, is banking on this local grounding to differentiate its offering in an island market where international hospitality continues to grow denser.

This renewal of leadership teams is being seen more broadly at Four Seasons, which has this year stepped up appointments of general managers promoted from within its own organisation, following the series of internal appointments announced in Nevis, Anguilla and Los Angeles earlier in the year.
