A return to the Ritz-Carlton brand and the Caribbean

The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman has appointed John Woolley as General Manager. He joins from the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa in Vietnam, which he had led since 2023.

His career with Marriott International spans more than two decades, with leadership roles in North America, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Between 2020 and 2022, he led The Ritz-Carlton, Bali. His move to Grand Cayman therefore marks a double return: to the group’s luxury brand and to a region that has featured throughout his career.

The appointment comes a few weeks after that of Hugo Lecanda as General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Turks & Caicos, another of the brand’s Caribbean resorts.

A 58-hectare resort between North Sound and Seven Mile Beach

John Woolley will oversee all operations and the strategic direction of the resort. The property extends over nearly 58 hectares, from North Sound to the shores of Seven Mile Beach.

The resort comprises 369 rooms and suites, The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Grand Cayman, and several dining venues. Its culinary offering is anchored by Blue by Eric Ripert, which the resort describes as the only AAA Five Diamond restaurant in the Caribbean.

The resort also holds Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star ratings for the hotel, the spa and Blue by Eric Ripert. It has also been awarded a MICHELIN Key.

A career shaped by sales leadership

A graduate in modern history from Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom, John Woolley built the first part of his career in commercial roles. In New York, he served successively as Director of Sales and Marketing at the Renaissance New York Times Square and then at the New York Marriott Downtown, where he led the hotel’s repositioning towards the leisure market in the aftermath of 9/11.

He then joined the Aruba Marriott Resort, where he supported its relaunch following a $50 million renovation programme, approximately €43 million. He went on to become Regional Director of Sales and Marketing for South Asia, covering 23 hotels in India, Australia and Malaysia, with a team of more than 200 people.

The Caribbean and Latin America as a common thread

As Area Director for the Caribbean and Latin America, John Woolley oversaw revenue strategy for a portfolio of 18 hotels and resorts, whose combined revenue reached $556 million in 2013, approximately €477 million. He then served as interim General Manager of the JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City.

His task force assignments also took him to Frenchman’s Reef in St. Thomas, to the opening of the Marriott Port-au-Prince in Haiti, and to the launch of the European Convention Network, a sales organisation bringing together 14 major group hotels across 12 European countries.

He then moved to Bali, where he led the Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak for more than four years before taking the helm of The Ritz-Carlton, Bali. This track record earned him the titles of Diamond Courtyard General Manager of the Year and Sales General Manager of the Year for Asia-Pacific. Before Phu Quoc, he served as Area Director of Sales & Distribution for Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Other general managers of the brand have recently taken up their posts in Asia, such as Vincent Pauchon, appointed General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi.

The Cayman Cookout, a flagship programme to lead

John Woolley will also be responsible for the resort’s signature programming, first and foremost The Ritz-Carlton Cayman Cookout, the annual culinary event hosted by chef Eric Ripert.

The event brings together chefs and culinary personalities for dinners, tastings and demonstrations. Its 18th edition will take place from 14 to 17 January 2027.

THT Analysis – John Woolley’s profile, combining commercial and operational expertise, appears well suited to an asset whose value rests as much on its accolades as on its ability to drive an events programme of international standing.
