A name drawn from the Indian Ocean water lily

Aman‘s first property in the Maldives will be called Amanolu. The name combines Aman, meaning “peace” in Sanskrit, with Olu, inspired by the water lily. The flower grows throughout the Indian Ocean region and has long been associated with serenity, renewal and a connection with nature.

The resort will be located in the heart of Vaavu Atoll, which the group describes as one of the most unspoilt and secluded parts of the archipelago. The project was announced in September 2024 under the working name Aman Maldives. It now has both an identity and a timeline, with opening scheduled for 2028.

Kerry Hill Architects at the helm

The design has been entrusted to Kerry Hill Architects (KHA), a longstanding Aman partner. The practice has drawn inspiration from the Maldives’ white coral-sand beaches, turquoise lagoons and island setting. Its approach favours simple, understated architecture that brings the landscape into everyday life and blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors.

The programme comprises 52 hotel keys and a limited collection of 16 branded residences. According to the group, Amanolu will introduce the Aman way of life to the Maldives for the first time.

Sixteen residences, sixteen private islands

The residential component is the most distinctive element of the project: each residence will occupy its own island within the destination. Some will face a single shoreline, with views of either the sunrise or the sunset. Others will stretch across the island from one coast to the other, with a beach on each side.

Each residence will feature five bedrooms, extensive indoor and outdoor living spaces opening onto a private beach, a 25-metre pool and a private berth. Dedicated staff quarters are planned in every villa, allowing Aman to deliver the personalised service on which its reputation rests, while connecting owners to Amanolu’s hotel offering.

One island for wellbeing, another for leisure

Owners and hotel guests will share the same facilities. One island will be devoted entirely to wellbeing, with an expansive Aman Spa and the brand’s signature Spa Houses. A second island will be dedicated to leisure and exploration, including diving, snorkelling, water sports and discovery of the marine world.

The dining offer will span several venues, including Aman’s international culinary concepts. It will be complemented by family facilities and social spaces.

A 36-property portfolio gathering pace

Founded in 1988 with the opening of Amanpuri in Phuket, Aman now counts 36 hotels and resorts across 21 destinations, with a further ten properties under construction. The group has also diversified into skincare, fragrance, ready-to-wear and furniture through Aman Interiors. In 2020, it launched its second hotel brand, Janu, whose first property opened in Tokyo in March 2024.

Amanolu follows a series of recent announcements from the group: Aman Seoul, its first property in South Korea, in early September 2026, and Janu Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, also due in 2028.

Analysis – Aman is a late entrant to a Maldives market already crowded with major ultra-luxury brands and fast-growing local groups such as Atmosphere Core, which has just signed its tenth resort in the archipelago. To stand out, the group is betting on a small key count and on branded residences each set on a private island. It is a model in which residential sales carry as much weight as hotel operations.
