Brazil | Vila Galé Invests €27 Million in a 312-Room Resort in Brumadinho, Near Inhotim

Portuguese hotel group Vila Galé is preparing to open a new 312-room resort in Brumadinho, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, in 2028. Representing an announced investment of €27 million, the project will be developed on a 108,000 sq m site near the Inhotim Institute, one of Brazil's leading cultural tourism attractions. Following its opening in Ouro Preto, Vila Galé is reaffirming its ambition to develop inland resorts beyond its traditional coastal destinations.

A 312-room resort scheduled to open in 2028

Portuguese hotel group Vila Galé (see the Focus section below) has confirmed the development of a new property in Brumadinho, within the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, capital of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

The future Vila Galé Collection Brumadinho will feature 312 rooms and is expected to open in 2028, according to the operator’s latest announced timetable.

Several Brazilian trade publications have identified April 2028 as the target opening date, while construction work is scheduled to begin in 2026.

The project represents an investment of €27 million, according to information published by Vila Galé in its presentation of the group’s new developments.

Estimates expressed in Brazilian currency have varied between announcements: BRL 150 million when the project was formalised, followed by BRL 160 million in a subsequent commercial communication.

These figures represent estimates published at different dates and should not be added together.

A 108,000 sq m site near the Inhotim Institute

The location is one of the future resort’s principal assets.

The 108,000 sq m site, whose transfer was formalised with the municipality of Brumadinho, is located in the Serra da Conquistinha area, near the Inhotim Institute and the BR-381 highway.

The project also benefits from an attractive natural setting, with views over the Rio Manso reservoir.

The formalisation of the land transfer brought together Jorge Rebelo de Almeida, President and founder of Vila Galé, and Gabriel Augusto Parreiras, Mayor of Brumadinho.

The group had identified the destination’s tourism potential because of its proximity to Inhotim, a cultural institution combining contemporary art, architecture and botanical gardens.

This location could attract guests seeking cultural breaks, leisure stays, events and short getaways from Belo Horizonte.

Wave pool, spa and event facilities

The future Vila Galé Collection Brumadinho will offer more than accommodation alone.

The announced development programme includes:

  • 312 rooms;
  • Several restaurants and bars;
  • Swimming pools, including a wave pool;
  • A lake;
  • A Satsanga Spa, the group’s wellness brand;
  • Event and meeting facilities.

The property is therefore expected to target several demand segments, including families, leisure travellers, regional guests and corporate events.

The inclusion of a wave pool and extensive leisure facilities indicates a destination resort positioning rather than that of a traditional urban hotel.

However, the group’s announcement does not yet specify the total built area, the number of restaurants or the precise capacity of the event facilities.

Following Ouro Preto, Vila Galé strengthens its presence in Minas Gerais

The future Brumadinho property will mark another stage in Vila Galé’s development in Minas Gerais.

In May 2025, the group inaugurated Vila Galé Collection Ouro Preto, establishing its presence in this southeastern Brazilian state.

According to information provided by the group’s commercial management team in Brazil, the investment in Ouro Preto amounted to approximately BRL 180 million.

The Brumadinho development would therefore bring the combined announced investment in the two properties to approximately BRL 340 million, based on the BRL 160 million estimate for the new project.

This development forms part of a geographical diversification strategy.

Historically established in Brazil’s coastal destinations, Vila Galé is now seeking to develop resorts in regions whose appeal is more closely associated with culture, nature, heritage and gastronomy.

Minas Gerais is also an important source market: according to the group’s commercial management, the state represents its second-largest customer catchment area in Brazil, behind São Paulo.

Inhotim: A catalyst for hotel investment

The choice of Brumadinho is closely linked to the appeal of the Inhotim Institute, located within the municipality.

This cultural and landscaped complex ranks among Brazil’s most distinctive destinations, combining contemporary art collections, architectural pavilions and botanical gardens.

Its reputation provides a differentiating factor for hotel investors.

Developing accommodation nearby could encourage longer stays and help establish the area as a destination in its own right, rather than simply a day-trip excursion from Belo Horizonte.

Local authorities have also presented the Vila Galé project as a driver of economic development.

Initial public announcements referred to approximately 300 direct and indirect jobs, alongside municipal investment intended to improve road access.

The Minas Gerais state government had also mentioned an allocation of approximately BRL 10 million for access infrastructure.

These figures relate to the initial announcements and remain subject to confirmation in light of the final construction timetable.

A Brazilian development strategy extending beyond coastal resorts

The Brumadinho project forms part of a broader development programme in Brazil.

Vila Galé is planning several openings over the coming years, including:

  • Florianópolis, in Santa Catarina state: a 309-room resort, also announced for 2028;
  • Coruripe, in Alagoas: two properties, comprising a 144-room Collection hotel and a 350-room Nep Kids family resort;
  • São Luís, in Maranhão: two Collection projects with 51 and 43 rooms respectively, involving the restoration of historic buildings.

The group is therefore combining several approaches: coastal resorts, family-oriented properties, heritage conversions and resorts in cultural destinations.

At the beginning of October 2026, Vila Galé operated 13 properties in Brazil, according to information released to mark the 25th anniversary of its presence in the country.

The future Brumadinho resort will contribute to the diversification of this portfolio.

LTH Analysis | The emergence of inland cultural resorts in Brazil

Vila Galé’s investment in Brumadinho illustrates an interesting geographical shift in the Brazilian hospitality market.

Having developed its network around coastal destinations, the group is now targeting regions where visitor demand is driven by a combination of culture, heritage, nature and domestic tourism.

Proximity to Inhotim provides the project with an established attraction that could support demand.

However, the 312-room format and extensive leisure facilities will require the resort to generate longer stays and attract a diversified customer base.

For investors, the key question will be how to balance tourist arrivals, regional demand, seasonality and operating costs.

Vila Galé’s strategy is to transform a cultural destination into a fully fledged resort destination capable of economically sustaining a large-scale property.

FOCUS | Vila Galé: A diversified Portuguese hospitality group

Founded on 30 May 1986 by Jorge Rebelo de Almeida, José Silvestre Lavrador and José Ruivo, Vila Galé is one of Portugal’s leading hotel groups. Its first property, now known as Vila Galé Atlântico, opened in 1988 in Albufeira, in the Algarve.

Key group figures, according to its reference press dossier:

  • 44 hotels across Portugal (32), Brazil (10), Cuba (1) and Spain (1).
  • 9,819 rooms and 24,192 beds.
  • Approximately 4,500 employees.
  • €275 million in revenue in 2023, up 20% year on year.
  • These figures represent a historical snapshot of the portfolio and should not be interpreted as current staffing or capacity figures as of October 2026.

A portfolio structured around several concepts. Alongside its Vila Galé hotels, the group operates Vila Galé Collection, a brand established in 2013 and dedicated to distinctive properties, premium locations and personalised experiences. The group also develops family-oriented offerings and food and beverage and wellness concepts, notably Clube Nep, Massa Fina, Inevitável and Satsanga Spa & Wellness.

Brazil: A strategic market since 2001. Vila Galé entered the Brazilian market with the opening of Vila Galé Fortaleza before developing a network encompassing resorts, urban hotels and heritage destinations. The Brumadinho project extends this geographical and tourism diversification.

Diversification beyond hospitality. The group is also active in agriculture, viticulture and olive oil production, notably through the Santa Vitória brand in Alentejo and Val Moreira in the Douro Valley. These activities support its wine tourism and agritourism offerings while strengthening synergies between agricultural production, food and beverage and hospitality.
