Treebo Hospitality Ventures and Accor have ended negotiations on a master licence agreement that would have brought the French hotel group’s Ibis and Mercure brands to the Indian hotel market, according to Sidharth Gupta, co-founder and CEO of Treebo, cited by Destination.com.
This agreement, unveiled by the two companies in April 2025, aimed to accelerate Treebo’s development in the branded hotel sector, with greater capacity to accommodate guests. For Accor, this collaboration was a key element of its strategy to operate 300 properties in India by 2031, up from 71 managed hotels at the time the partnership was first announced.
Sidharth Gupta stated that despite the negotiations, the two parties had failed to reach binding agreements.
The failure of the negotiations deprives Accor of the partner that would have given it access to India’s secondary and tertiary cities, where Treebo is already established with more than 800 hotels across 120 cities. While the goal of opening 300 hotels in India by the end of the decade did not depend exclusively on this collaboration, the partnership would have allowed Accor to immediately gain scale beyond the major metropolitan areas. Asked how he would approach things differently with another international hotel group interested in a similar deal, Sidharth Gupta described the breakdown of negotiations as straightforward, without specifying the factors involved. Neither company has so far announced an alternative strategy for its expansion plans in India.
