Fancy combining pleasure and solidarity on your next trip? Choosing a hotel in Spain may soon no longer depend solely on factors such as location, views or the swimming pool. Travellers who care about employees’ working conditions will be able to select establishments rated according to fair employment criteria through a dedicated mobile application.
The initiative comes from a trade union representing hotel housekeepers, which has launched a crowdfunding campaign to finance the app. The association Las Kellys – short for las que limpian, meaning “those who clean” – was founded in 2016. The group previously attempted, without success, to have its interests represented through booking platforms such as Booking.com and TripAdvisor. By the end of August, nearly €85,000 had been raised. The application is expected to be available in 2022.
Decent Pay and Working Hours
To be listed on the app, hotels will be required to comply with national agreements on pay and working hours, adhere to health and safety regulations, respect maternity leave provisions and ensure equal pay. An increasing number of travellers are seeking more sustainable holidays in terms of their environmental impact. Fair employment practices could become another important booking criterion.
