Mandarin Oriental, Geneva has announced the appointment of Christian Wildhaber as General Manager, effective from 1 September 2026.
A Swiss hotelier with an international background
A native of Vevey, in the canton of Vaud, Christian Wildhaber brings almost thirty years of experience in luxury hospitality. Trilingual, he is fluent in French, English and German — an asset for a Geneva property that welcomes an international and institutional clientele.
His career has taken him to the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Sydney and Guangzhou, where he built a recognised expertise in openings, repositionings and transformations of prestigious hotel properties.
From Lucerne to Jakarta: a career within the Mandarin Oriental group
Before taking the helm of Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta in August 2025, Christian Wildhaber spent nearly six years leading Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern, where he steered the property’s transformation, opening and launch. The project helped position the Lucerne address among Switzerland’s foremost luxury hotels.
His successor at the helm of the Lucerne hotel was Matthias Kindl, who also comes from within the group’s ranks. This internal reshuffle illustrates the talent management policy implemented by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group to support the growth of its portfolio.
An operational profile forged in pre-openings
Christian Wildhaber‘s career was built step by step, from executive chef roles with Kempinski Hotels in the early 2000s through to general management. He oversaw the pre-opening of the Langham, Shenzhen, including coordination of an equipment budget of more than USD 8 million — around EUR 7.4 million — as well as the establishment of operational procedures and team recruitment.
This experience of launches and transformations, also gained in Hong Kong and Sydney within the Langham group, provides a solid foundation for running an address as well established as Mandarin Oriental, Geneva.
Geneva, a stronghold of luxury hospitality
The Geneva destination, underpinned by a dense business and institutional clientele, remains a fiercely contested market for luxury hotel groups. The sector has recently seen several governance changes, such as the appointment of Héctor Lugo as General Manager of The Woodward, Auberge Collection, another five-star property in the city.
Against this backdrop, the 2026-2030 responsible tourism strategy unveiled by Genève Tourisme & Congrès highlights the economic weight of the local hotel sector, which recorded close to 3.9 million overnight stays in 2025.
What lies ahead for the Geneva property
Situated on the banks of the Rhône, close to Lake Geneva, the Jet d’Eau and St. Pierre Cathedral, Mandarin Oriental, Geneva has 178 rooms and suites.
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group currently operates 46 hotels, 15 residences and 39 Exceptional Homes in 29 countries and territories, with a further pipeline of projects in development. Christian Wildhaber’s appointment forms part of the group’s ambition to strengthen its position among luxury urban addresses in Europe.
