André Fehlauer takes charge at Gol Linhas Aéreas while Willie Walsh becomes CEO of IndiGo, two moves that reflect a sweeping governance renewal across global aviation.

The global aviation sector is going through a particularly dense sequence of governance changes this autumn 2026. The Abra group announced on 13 August 2026 the appointment of André Fehlauer as Chief Executive Officer of Gol Linhas Aéreas, while IndiGo, India’s leading airline, had confirmed in the spring the arrival of the seasoned Willie Walsh as its chief executive. Both moves come as major airline groups seek to consolidate their growth amid heightened international competition.

Gol Linhas Aéreas banks on strategic continuity

At Gol, a subsidiary of the Abra group, Celso Ferrer will step down as CEO on 31 August 2026 to pursue a new professional opportunity, after more than twenty years with the airline. Appointed CEO in 2022, he led the restructuring process that strengthened the group’s financial and operational position, as well as its integration within Abra.

André Fehlauer, who will take up his role in September 2026, returns to a company he knows well, having spent eight years leading Smiles, the group’s loyalty programme, in Argentina and Brazil. His career also includes heading Livelo, a major Brazilian loyalty programme, as well as roles at Citi and Credicard. Albert Perez, who joined Gol in early 2024, has been promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer, an expanded role following his work strengthening the airline’s operational performance and contributing to punctuality figures among the best in Brazil.

“Over more than 20 years with this company, I have had the privilege of growing alongside extraordinary people, sharing challenges, overcoming difficult moments, and celebrating achievements that have shaped the history of Brazilian aviation.

We are concluding an important transformation cycle, strengthening our operations, our culture, and our position for the future. None of this would have been possible without the dedication, resilience, and passion of our Team of Eagles. I leave my position confident that the Company is experiencing one of the most promising moments in its history. I am certain that, under André Fehlauer’s leadership, and with the exceptional talent of Albert and our teams, Gol will continue to grow, innovate, and connect people and dreams for many years to come.” Celso Ferrer, CEO of GOL

“On behalf of the Abra Group, I would like to thank Celso Ferrer for his leadership and contributions to Gol over more than two decades. As CEO, he played a pivotal role in guiding Gol through a transformative period and positioning the airline for its next phase of growth. His impact extends beyond business results, through the strong culture, teams, and leadership legacy he helped build.

We are pleased to welcome André Fehlauer as CEO and are proud to promote Albert to his newly expanded role. André’s experience and deep knowledge of the business will ensure the strategic vision that, together with Albert’s operational expertise, will support the Company’s next phase of growth and value creation.” Adrian Neuhauser, CEO of Abra Group

This transition is part of a broader growth trajectory for the airline, which earlier this year announced its first intercontinental routes between Rio de Janeiro and Europe.

IndiGo hands the reins to a global aviation veteran

In India, IndiGo has appointed Willie Walsh as Chief Executive Officer, several months after Pieter Elbers’ resignation in the wake of the crisis over 4,500 cancelled flights in December 2025. Walsh officially took up his role following the announcement of his appointment in March 2026.

With more than forty years of experience in international aviation, Willie Walsh previously led Aer Lingus and then British Airways, before heading International Airlines Group. He subsequently served as Director General of IATA between 2021 and 2024. His mandate at IndiGo is to accelerate the airline’s global growth, strengthen its network and commercial strategy, and improve operational excellence and the passenger experience.

A shared approach: banking on experience to drive growth

Both appointments share a common thread: the choice of experienced leaders, often drawn from within the airline industry itself, to steer groups through major growth phases. This mirrors other leadership renewals seen across the sector, such as the appointment of Christophe Didier as Vice President Global Sales and Distribution at Etihad Airways, where experience gained at several major international carriers also weighed heavily in the choice of leadership.

Adrian Neuhauser, CEO of the Abra group, praised Celso Ferrer’s contribution, noting that he played a decisive role in positioning Gol for its next phase of growth. He also indicated that André Fehlauer’s experience will ensure the group’s strategic continuity, in synergy with Albert Perez’s operational expertise.

What this shift reveals for the industry

For investors and operators in the hospitality sector, these governance changes in aviation are far from trivial: air connectivity directly shapes tourism flows and the performance of the hotel markets they serve. A strengthened commercial strategy and network at both Gol and IndiGo could, over time, influence visitor dynamics in the Brazilian and Indian markets — two high-potential growth regions for international hospitality.
