Shawn Muscat takes the helm at Malta’s first Hard Rock Hotel

Hard Rock Hotel Malta officially announced the appointment of Shawn Muscat as General Manager on 26 October 2026, confirming a position he has held since the beginning of the month.

Located in St George’s Bay, the hotel opened in September 2026, marking the arrival of the Hard Rock hotel brand in the Maltese archipelago.

With 397 guest rooms, seven restaurant and bar concepts, and a 3,800 sq m wellness facility, the property offers a combination of upscale accommodation, dining, leisure and entertainment.

Shawn Muscat is now responsible for the hotel’s operational, commercial and financial strategy. His remit includes supporting the property’s post-opening development and consolidating its positioning within the Maltese hospitality market.

More than 20 years of experience in Malta’s hospitality industry

Before joining Hard Rock Hotel Malta, Shawn Muscat had served as General Manager of db San Antonio Hotel + Spa in Qawra since January 2025.

He previously held the position of General Manager at Labranda Riviera Hotel & Spa from October 2023 to December 2024.

Between 2017 and 2023, he held several leadership positions at Urban Valley Resort & Spa in Kappara. Initially appointed General Manager, he was promoted to Cluster General Manager in October 2019, a position he retained until August 2023.

His career also includes more than four years at Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands, where he successively served as Front Office Manager, Director of Operations and Assistant General Manager.

These positions enabled him to develop expertise in resort management, operational leadership, revenue optimisation and team development.

Hilton and Radisson Blu: operational and financial experience

Shawn Muscat began his career at Sol Suncrest Hotel, where he worked as Junior Rooms Division Manager between 2002 and 2005, before joining Island Hotels Group and subsequently Radisson Blu.

He later joined Hilton Malta, where he notably served as Front Office Manager from 2007 to 2012.

In 2012, he also held operational responsibilities for Hilton in Milan, before taking charge of purchasing in Malta between 2012 and 2013.

This experience provided him with an understanding of the various drivers of hotel performance: revenue management, cost control, procurement, investment, service quality and employee development.

His professional background is therefore characterised by a progression from rooms division operations to general management, encompassing operational and financial responsibilities along the way.

Education combining management, marketing and hospitality

Shawn Muscat holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Henley Business School, awarded in 2022.

He also holds a postgraduate diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, as well as a diploma in Accommodation Operations Management from the Institute of Tourism Studies.

This combination of operational and strategic expertise is an asset in supporting the commercial development of a hotel positioned at the intersection of premium hospitality and entertainment.

In announcing his new position, Shawn Muscat notably thanked the Debono family and the leadership of db Group for their trust and the opportunities they had given him.

He also emphasised the importance of teamwork, trust and employee commitment to the success of a hotel.

LTH Analysis | Two leadership appointments to support the hotel’s post-opening development

The simultaneous appointment of a General Manager and a Director of Marketing reflects the challenges associated with the initial operating phase of a newly opened hotel.

With almost 400 rooms and an extensive dining, leisure and wellness offering, Hard Rock Hotel Malta must coordinate several revenue centres while establishing its brand in a competitive tourism market.

Shawn Muscat’s background is particularly relevant: his knowledge of the Maltese market is complemented by experience in hotel operations, procurement and financial management.

Newton Fernandes’ arrival adds a dedicated function focused on brand visibility and development.

The challenge will be to translate the strength of the Hard Rock brand into sustainable commercial performance, beyond the initial novelty associated with the hotel’s opening.
