Etihad Airways and Southwest Airlines: Loyalty beyond traditional alliances

Etihad Guest and Rapid Rewards have announced a partnership enabling members to earn and redeem points or miles across the respective networks of both airlines from spring 2027.

Etihad Guest members will be able to earn miles on eligible Southwest Airlines flights and redeem them for travel across its network serving the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Conversely, Rapid Rewards members will be able to earn points on selected Etihad Airways flights and redeem them for travel across the UAE carrier’s international network, including new destinations such as Krabi, Zanzibar and Hanoi.

This cooperation extends the value of both programmes without requiring travellers to concentrate their journeys with a single airline. It illustrates the growing importance of loyalty as a tool for attracting and retaining international customers.

Qatar Airways and QNB Group have adopted a different approach, announcing a global partnership designed to strengthen the airline’s payment infrastructure.

The agreement will integrate QNB’s payment processing and acceptance capabilities into Qatar Airways’ digital sales channels.

The stated objective is to facilitate transactions, enhance security and streamline the purchasing journey for customers across the airline’s international network.

Beyond the technical dimension, this collaboration highlights the importance of the booking and payment stages to commercial performance. A seamless transaction process is a shared priority for airlines, hotels and the wider travel distribution industry.

British Airways and Hoppers: Gastronomy as an extension of the destination

To mark the launch of its new route to Colombo, British Airways has chosen a more experience-led collaboration with Hoppers, the London restaurant group specialising in Sri Lankan and South Indian cuisine.

From 23 October 2026, Club World business-class passengers travelling on the route will be able to enjoy a specially developed menu created in collaboration with Hoppers restaurants, available for a limited period.

The initiative aims to introduce passengers to the flavours and culinary culture of Sri Lanka from the moment they begin their journey.

The collaboration therefore transforms in-flight dining into a means of promoting the destination, while associating British Airways with a restaurant brand recognised for its distinctive culinary identity.

LTH Analysis | Airlines are becoming partnership platforms

These three initiatives illustrate a shift in the competitive model of airlines: differentiation no longer depends solely on the flight product itself, but also on the wider ecosystem of services surrounding it.

Loyalty partnerships extend commercial relationships beyond each carrier’s own network. Payment partnerships aim to improve the efficiency of digital distribution. Gastronomic collaborations, meanwhile, reinforce the experiential and cultural dimensions of travel.

For the hospitality industry, the parallel is clear: hotel groups are also developing loyalty, distribution and experience ecosystems involving partners from outside their core business.

The strategic question therefore concerns the value created by these collaborations: acquiring new customers, improving retention, increasing conversion rates or strengthening brand preference.

The objective is no longer simply to sell an airline seat or a hotel room, but to engage travellers in a broader commercial and experiential relationship.
