IHG enters Luang Prabang with Holiday Inn Resort
IHG Hotels & Resorts is continuing its development in Laos with the signing of a new property under the Holiday Inn Resort brand.
The future Holiday Inn Resort Luang Prabang Naluang Hill will be located on the slopes of Naluang Hill, close to the historic centre of Luang Prabang.
The project is being developed in partnership with Naluang International Resort and Hotel Limited, the hotel group’s local partner.
Scheduled to open in 2027, the property will mark IHG’s first presence in this northern Lao destination, renowned for its architectural heritage, temples and Lao and French cultural influences.
The hotel will offer panoramic views over Luang Prabang while providing access to the city’s principal tourist attractions.
The partners have disclosed neither the investment amount nor the financial terms of their agreement.
A 101-key resort combining leisure, family travel and MICE
The future resort will comprise 101 guestrooms, suites and villas, catering to leisure travellers, families and corporate groups.
Planned facilities include four food and beverage outlets, a swimming pool, fitness centre and spa.
The property will also feature more than 500 sq m of meeting space, suitable for small and medium-sized events, seminars and corporate retreats.
The hotel will incorporate the signature services of the Holiday Inn Resort brand, including the Kids Stay & Eat Free programme, designed for family guests.
This positioning reflects IHG’s intention to develop an offering that combines cultural tourism, leisure stays and meetings and events.
Luang Prabang: A heritage destination benefiting from improved accessibility
Formerly the royal capital of Laos, Luang Prabang is one of the country’s most emblematic tourist destinations.
Its historic centre, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is distinguished by the coexistence of traditional Lao architecture and buildings dating from the French colonial period.
The destination also benefits from its proximity to the Mekong River and natural attractions such as Kuang Si Falls and the Pak Ou Caves.
For IHG, improvements in regional accessibility represent a favourable factor for the development of international hotel supply.
The city has an international airport and benefits from high-speed rail connections that facilitate travel within Laos and to neighbouring markets.
Shi’ai Liang, Senior Director, Development, South East Asia & Korea at IHG Hotels & Resorts, highlights growing traveller interest in destinations combining cultural heritage, natural surroundings and authentic tourism experiences.
The group also sees potential in corporate meetings, incentive travel and company retreats.
IHG’s Laos portfolio set to grow from two to three hotels
IHG currently operates two hotels in Vientiane, under the Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn & Suites brands.
Together, these properties comprise 471 keys.
The opening of Holiday Inn Resort Luang Prabang Naluang Hill will bring the group’s announced portfolio in Laos to three properties and 572 keys, assuming no further changes before 2027.
For Naluang International Resort and Hotel Limited, the partnership is intended to provide access to Holiday Inn’s international brand recognition, IHG’s distribution network and its operational expertise.
Chen Yichao, Director of Naluang International Resort and Hotel Limited, presents the future property as a resort destination designed to accommodate a range of occasions, including holidays, private celebrations, seminars and business meetings.
IHG is thus seeking to diversify its geographical presence in Laos, complementing its urban hotel operations in Vientiane with a resort offering in a heritage destination.
LTH Analysis | International hotel brands target secondary heritage destinations
IHG’s planned entry into Luang Prabang illustrates international hotel groups’ growing interest in cultural destinations where tourism development is supported by both heritage assets and improvements in transport infrastructure.
The choice of Holiday Inn Resort is significant: rather than adopting an exclusively upscale positioning, IHG is favouring a brand capable of attracting several customer segments, including families, international travellers and smaller corporate groups.
For the local property development partner, affiliation with an international brand can provide greater commercial visibility and a more structured operating model. However, the economic value of this relationship will depend on brand-related costs, distribution performance and the property’s ability to generate sufficient revenue to support its investment.
Luang Prabang’s heritage status also calls for particular attention to the architectural and environmental integration of new developments. Proximity to a UNESCO-listed site is an important attraction, but operators must still reconcile tourism development with the preservation of local identity.
For IHG, this signing represents a gradual diversification of its presence in Laos, moving from a portfolio concentrated in the capital towards a combination of urban hospitality and cultural resort accommodation.
