Thompson Hotels makes its debut in Italy
Located on Via delle Botteghe Oscure, close to Piazza Venezia, the Pantheon and the Roman Forum, Thompson Rome has now welcomed its first guests.
The property marks the arrival of Thompson Hotels in Italy, as part of Hyatt’s Lifestyle Portfolio.
The hotel occupies a converted 1940s building, with several original architectural features preserved and restored.
These include a monumental marble staircase, as well as a sculptural wall and an inlaid floor created by Italian artist Gio Pomodoro. The artworks were rediscovered during renovation works after remaining concealed for several decades.
The refurbishment combines these heritage features with contemporary interiors, placing particular emphasis on natural materials and bespoke furniture.
AG Group and Rossifin Group responsible for ownership and operations
The announcement from Hyatt specifies that Thompson Rome is owned and operated by AG Group s.r.l. and Rossifin Group.
This arrangement distinguishes the property’s ownership and operation from Hyatt’s role, which includes providing the Thompson Hotels brand and its commercial ecosystem.
Founded by Andrea Girolami, AG Group operates across several areas of hospitality and inbound tourism through three divisions: AG Hotels, AG Boutique Journey and AG Hotel Consulting.
The group is active in hotel management, tour operating, destination management services (DMC) and consultancy.
The opening of Thompson Rome therefore provides another example of collaboration between an international hotel brand and Italian hospitality operators.

However, the announcement does not specify the investment amount, the equity distribution between the partners or the precise nature of the commercial agreement concluded with Hyatt.
69 rooms and suites, including 19 suites
Thompson Rome offers 69 rooms and suites, including 19 suites, representing approximately 28% of its accommodation inventory.
The different categories include Junior Suites, suites with patios or terraces, and a 104 sq m Thompson Suite complemented by an 80 sq m private terrace.
Some rooms overlook Rome’s rooftops, while others feature balconies facing Via delle Botteghe Oscure.
This relatively high proportion of suites reflects the property’s upscale positioning, with accommodation designed for urban travellers seeking additional space and personalised services.
Three dining venues under the culinary direction of Fabio Fioravanti
Food and beverage is another important component of Thompson Rome’s positioning.
The property features three venues:
- LYVE Restaurant, specialising in contemporary Mediterranean cuisine.
- LYVE Rooftop, offering cocktails, aperitivi and sharing dishes with views across the city.
- Lobby Lounge, designed as an all-day meeting and social space.
The culinary direction of LYVE Restaurant is led by Executive Chef Fabio Fioravanti, originally from Ostia.
With more than twenty years of international experience, he has worked with the Alain Ducasse group and at Le Louis XV – Alain Ducasse at Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant.
His cuisine places particular emphasis on seafood, ingredients from the Italian coastline and Mediterranean culinary traditions.
The hotel is led by General Manager Arturo Gomez.
Contemporary art integrated into the hotel experience
Beyond accommodation and dining, Thompson Rome intends to develop a cultural programme connected to its urban surroundings.
Its art collection includes works associated with the Scuola Romana and the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo, alongside creations by Francesco Del Drago, Giangaetano Patanè and Guido Strazza.
These artworks are displayed throughout the public areas and guest rooms.
An artist-in-residence programme is also planned, providing opportunities for exhibitions and encounters with Rome’s creative community.
The property will additionally offer culinary workshops, tastings and photography experiences from its seventh floor.
This approach aims to establish the hotel as a destination not only for international travellers but also for local guests.
LTH Analysis | Hyatt continues its lifestyle expansion through local operators
The opening of Thompson Rome has two principal strategic implications.
For Hyatt, it introduces another brand from its Lifestyle Portfolio into the Italian market, in an international destination with strong tourism and cultural appeal.
For AG Group and Rossifin Group, the association with Thompson Hotels enables a refurbished historic property to be positioned under an international brand while retaining a local ownership and operating structure.
The model illustrates a development strategy combining the commercial strength of an international hotel group with the real estate and operational expertise of local partners.
The choice of a 69-room property, with suites accounting for nearly 28% of its inventory, also highlights the appeal of relatively small urban hotels capable of differentiating themselves through architecture, dining and cultural programming.
The commercial success of Thompson Rome will depend in particular on its ability to combine international visitor demand, local patronage and the commercial potential of its food and beverage venues.
