Disney Imagination: A new cruise operation sailing from Japan

On 13 October 2026, in Tokyo, Oriental Land Co. (OLC) officially unveiled the name of the first ship intended to operate Disney cruises in Japan: Disney Imagination.

The vessel is scheduled to enter service in spring 2029 and will operate as part of Disney Cruise Line Japan, a Disney-branded cruise business run by the Japanese group.

Oriental Land, the owner and operator of Tokyo Disney Resort under a licensing agreement with Disney, is thereby extending its activities beyond its theme parks and associated hotel ecosystem.

The announcement was made in the presence of Yumiko Takano, President and Chief Executive Officer of Oriental Land Co.; Ryotaro Shiiba, President of Oriental Land Cruise Co.; Natacha Rafalski, President of Disney Signature Experiences; and Tracy Wilson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Disney Cruise Line Operations.

The project builds on the longstanding partnership between Disney and Oriental Land, which enables the Japanese group to operate Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea.

A Wish-class cruise ship built around Disney storytelling

Disney Imagination will join the Wish class, a generation of vessels characterised by an offering that combines accommodation, themed dining, entertainment and immersive experiences.

The group intends to recreate the defining features of the Disney Cruise Line experience, particularly the theming of onboard spaces, service quality and the integration of Disney characters and storytelling worlds.

The name Imagination reflects the intention to place creativity and exploration at the heart of the ship’s identity.

In keeping with a Disney Cruise Line tradition, the ship’s stern will feature characters from the Disney universe.

For Disney Imagination, the chosen characters are Ariel and Sebastian from the animated film The Little Mermaid. The design will depict Ariel writing the ship’s name using her famous object repurposed as a writing instrument.

This customisation is one of the distinguishing features of Disney’s fleet, with each ship having its own narrative identity.

Oriental Land diversifies its business model

For Oriental Land, the launch of Disney Imagination represents a significant diversification of its activities.

The Japanese group already has extensive expertise in operating integrated tourism destinations that combine attractions, accommodation, restaurants, retail and entertainment.

Entering the cruise market extends this approach into a business where accommodation and leisure experiences are brought together within a single tourism product.

Operations will be handled by Oriental Land Cruise Co. under the partnership with Disney.

This structure distinguishes the Japanese cruise operation from Disney Cruise Line’s international business while drawing on the brand’s recognition and the experience standards associated with Disney.

Natacha Rafalski, President of Disney Signature Experiences, emphasised that the launch represents an important milestone in the development of Disney Cruise Line and in the longstanding relationship between Disney and Oriental Land Group.

One of the objectives is to make the Disney cruise experience accessible to new Japanese customer segments.

Key details still to be announced before bookings open

Although the ship’s name, class and provisional launch schedule are now known, several essential aspects of its operation have yet to be revealed.

Disney and Oriental Land have not yet provided details of the itineraries, destinations, onboard experiences or sales arrangements.

The information released on 13 October also does not specify the vessel’s exact passenger capacity, pricing or booking launch date.

Further announcements will follow as the project progresses towards its scheduled entry into service in spring 2029.

LTH Analysis | Cruising as an extension of Disney’s immersive hospitality model

The arrival of Disney Imagination in the Japanese market illustrates the growing convergence of hospitality, leisure and entertainment within the development strategies of major tourism groups.

A Disney cruise ship represents a particularly integrated hospitality asset: cabins provide the accommodation component, while dining, live shows, family activities and themed spaces shape the overall guest experience.

For Oriental Land, the challenge is to transfer to the maritime environment the expertise developed through Tokyo Disney Resort, establishing a new business while capitalising on a customer base already familiar with Disney’s characters and storytelling worlds.

However, the model involves constraints that differ from those of operating a theme park or hotel: capital investment requirements, maritime operating costs, port logistics, technical maintenance and the regulatory obligations specific to shipping.

Commercial success will also depend on the group’s ability to adapt itineraries, holiday durations and onboard services to the expectations of Japanese customers.

Beyond the introduction of a new cruise ship, Disney Imagination illustrates a diversification strategy based on monetising a brand universe through multiple forms of accommodation and tourism experiences.
