French contract catering group Sodexo announced on Wednesday 26 August 2026 a plan to cut more than 1,000 jobs in France. The decision, the group says, comes against a backdrop of intensifying competition and shifting consumer expectations.
The details of the plan
According to the group’s statement, implementation of the plan could lead to the elimination of 963 positions in France, equivalent to 4% of the workforce, under a job protection plan (plan de sauvegarde de l’emploi) preceded by a voluntary departure phase. Sodexo notes that a separate project concerning the group’s head office could result in a further 134 job losses.
In total, more than 1,000 positions could therefore disappear from the group’s French workforce, one of the country’s leading private employers in contract catering and corporate services.
A sector under competitive pressure
Sodexo’s statement explicitly cites intensifying competition and evolving consumer expectations as the drivers behind the reorganisation. The announcement comes in a French contract and/or commercial catering sector already marked in recent years by several redundancy plans at comparable operators, such as the restructuring under way at Flunch.
The group had also embarked in 2024 on a major strategic reorganisation, splitting its contract catering and facility management activities from its employee benefits and engagement business.
Market reaction
Towards the end of trading on 26 August, at around 5pm, Sodexo shares rose 1.2% to €57.70, in an SBF 120 index that was up 0.5%. This positive market reaction suggests investors viewed the announcement as a cost-rationalisation measure rather than a sign of structural difficulties.
A plan subject to social dialogue
The proposed job protection plan will follow the usual French regulatory framework, with a voluntary departure phase ahead of any compulsory redundancies, along with consultation of employee representative bodies. The group has not yet communicated a precise implementation timetable.
