The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open on 11 December 2026, a milestone that consolidates the emirate’s position as a global cultural capital. Designed by the late Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, the museum forms part of the Saadiyat Cultural District, alongside the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, making this district one of the world’s densest concentrations of cultural institutions.
The building spans 30 galleries arranged around a central atrium, punctuated by ten sculptural cones rising to 88 metres, across a total built-up area of 80,000 square metres, including 11,600 square metres of indoor exhibition space and 23,000 square metres of outdoor areas. The museum joins the Guggenheim constellation of institutions in New York, Venice and Bilbao, with a collection dedicated to modern and contemporary art since the 1960s, built around major themes such as abstraction, popular culture and storytelling.
“Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is a defining moment in our cultural journey,” said His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, noting that the museum will create new opportunities for learning, creativity and cultural exchange within the Saadiyat Cultural District. Dr Mariët Westermann, Director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, for her part described a collection that is both local and global, conceived as a place of connection and curiosity.
For the emirate’s hospitality sector, this opening represents a new catalyst for tourism appeal, continuing the cultural diversification strategy launched with the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The strengthening of the Saadiyat Cultural District, designed to attract a discerning international clientele, directly benefits hotels on the island and across the Emirati capital, which stand to gain from a cultural tourism flow set to intensify as the opening approaches.
