Hard Rock International opened its first hotel in Malta on 3 September 2026, in the seaside resort of St. George’s Bay, around twenty minutes from Valletta. Backed by Maltese group db Group, the 397-room property represents a direct investment of €350 million in the island’s tourism sector and the creation of several hundred jobs.
A landmark first for the group
The opening was marked by a guitar smash ceremony bringing together Hard Rock International executives, local partners and international figures, including several Maltese artists. It marks the American brand’s entry into the archipelago’s hotel market, where it had previously been absent despite a long-standing presence of its cafés and shops on the island.
Robert Debono, CEO of db Group, said the company was delighted to see its vision for Hard Rock Hotel Malta come to life as part of the wider development of St. George’s Bay. He added that they were looking forward to showing guests the cultural richness and exceptional views for which Malta is renowned, combined with Hard Rock’s iconic music-driven hospitality experience.
Malta is thus confirming its growing international hotel offering, following the announced debut of Minor Hotels on the island with the NH Collection Sliema, expected by the end of 2026.
A significant investment for island tourism
According to Hard Rock International, the opening represents a direct investment of €350 million in Malta’s tourism sector. Several hundred positions have been created, spanning a wide range of specialised roles, from mixologists to culinary artisans and wellness therapists.
John Rees, Senior Vice President Hotel Operations at Hard Rock International, said the evening marked a significant milestone for Malta, with €350 million invested in the island’s tourism sector and hundreds of new jobs created. He added that they were proud to be part of Malta’s next chapter.
This investment momentum echoes that seen elsewhere in the portfolios of international hotel groups originating from or established in the region, such as Corinthia Hotels, the luxury group founded in Malta and now present as far afield as China.
A premium offering built around the brand experience
The five-star* property features 397 rooms, eleven swimming pools including a cantilevered rooftop pool, more than ten dining, bar and lounge concepts, and a 466 sqm ballroom. The Rock Spa® wellness and fitness area, one of the largest in Malta, spans almost 3,800 sqm and includes the world’s largest Body Rock®, the brand’s premium gym.
Thomas Guss, General Manager of Hard Rock Hotel Malta, said the opening marked a particularly exciting chapter for St. George’s Bay, St. Julian’s, Pembroke and the island as a whole. He added that they were delighted to finally welcome guests and the local community, and to bring to life a vibrant new destination where music, entertainment, dining and unforgettable experiences meet.
The hotel also houses a 1,400 sqm Hard Rock Cafe, with seating for 222 guests indoors and outdoors, a Rock Shop® boutique and a collection of music memorabilia, positioning the whole as a fully-fledged dining and entertainment destination for local and international guests alike.
Outlook for Malta’s hotel market
This opening forms part of a broader strengthening of Malta’s premium and lifestyle offering, with several international brands having confirmed or announced their arrival on the island in recent months. For db Group, already the operator of several Maltese properties, this partnership with Hard Rock International consolidates its position as the country’s leading hotel group and confirms its strategy of diversifying into internationally recognised brands.
Hard Rock Hotel Malta is now taking bookings via the group’s official website.
