Norfin has appointed Barrière to operate a five-star hotel and branded residences at the historic Estalagem da Cegonha, in Vilamoura. The project marks the French hotel group’s entry into southern Portugal and represents its third property in the country. The property will be developed through a collaboration between Norfin’s development team, Barrière and the STC-Arquitetura studio, led by Samuel Torres de Carvalho, with the aim of creating “an intimate hotel property, rooted in the history, culture and landscape of the Algarve.”
The property, officially known as Casa Senhorial da Quinta de Quarteira, dates back to the 16th century and holds listed heritage status. This former manor house, which hosted King Dom Sebastião during a documented visit in 1573, will be restored in accordance with its heritage protection status, and complemented by new hotel and residential spaces, as well as gardens and courtyards.
The property is located in Vilamoura West, close to the new Vilamoura Equestrian Centre, which will host five-star international competitions in partnership with GRANDPRIX Events. Nearby is also The Els Club, a private golf club that will host the Portugal Invitational, marking the PGA TOUR Champions’ debut in Europe. According to the announcement, this proximity to these facilities is intended to position the hotel as a “prime location for equestrian and golf enthusiasts,” as part of a broader strategy to establish Vilamoura as a year-round tourist destination.
The dining offering will be another pillar of the project. Drawing on Barrière’s experience operating around 200 restaurants and bars, including the Fouquet’s brasserie and several Michelin-starred addresses, the future hotel will offer a gastronomic experience aimed at both guests and the local community. The project forms part of “the wider transformation of Vilamoura through a portfolio of investments including the award-winning marina, recently repositioned hotels and golf courses, residential communities and an expansion of hospitality, sports and leisure infrastructure,” the announcement states.
